Bustling Brompton has a changing and colourful history. Over the last two decades Brompton has emerged as a dynamic and sought-after suburb in Adelaide. Today, Brompton is recognised for affordability, convenience and a great sense of community.

Brompton was established in 1849 to provide accommodation to workers in the city and at industrial sites beyond. Much of the suburb was initially occupied by the South Australian Gas Company, who built a large gas production site which began operation in September 1863. Site usage at the gasworks changed over the years, with different owners and new technologies, but it was long known as Brompton’s most famous feature. Operations had ceased at the site by the year 2000 and after lying disused for many years, the site was acquired by Renewal SA in 2010. 

Since then, extensive work to clear and prepare the land for residential use has occurred. This work has been part of the wider redevelopment of the Bowden Heritage precinct, a six-hectare space which includes the gasworks, along with the former Clipsal Factory site. 

This urban renewal project has changed the look and feel of Brompton, bringing with it an increased number of dwellings, a new demographic and the exciting buzz of novelty.

At the time of writing, Brompton now houses about 3,500 residents and forms part of the City of Charles Sturt Council area.

• Community vibes where close knit residents have decorated many stobie poles along Hawker and Chief Streets, and created colourful mosaic planter pots and public artworks.

The Ugly

• Brompton is full of narrow and one-way streets; many were established in the 19th century and weren’t made to handle today’s traffic.
  
  
• Despite the installation of slow points and signage, some drivers still seem determined to use the back streets for a short cut from Torrens Road to Port Road.
  
  
• There is still a mix of light industry in the area. Detmold Packaging recently expanded operations and extended hours to produce sanitisers in the wake of COVID-19.

• If you’re travelling, leave the car at home, walk over to Andrew’s Airport Parking on Chief Street and hop aboard one of their regular airport shuttle services.
