Many of the magnificent properties in Stonyfell are one-of-a-kind; lots having been individually designed and built by creative architects. There are also some unique, if not downright quirky 1970s structures in Stonyfell. It’s not uncommon to see local stones and wood at work in the homes of the area.

Stonyfell has boundaries on Hallett Road and Penfold Road, and is partly bordered by the banks of Second Creek where it nears Greenhill Road. Stonyfell’s position next to this local waterway has no doubt influenced the street names in the area; Fernbank Terrace, Heatherbank Terrace, Rosebank Terrace, Myrtlebank Terrace and Ayrbank Terrace to name a few.

Clark Street Stonyfell was named after Henry Septimus Clark who co-founded the Stonyfell Vineyards in 1858 with Joseph Crompton, who also developed the Stonyfell Olive Company. Stonyfell was named after a property, Clifton House, which was built in 1852. In the 1930s, the then owner established a native animal sanctuary on the land, which was home to kangaroos, emus and koalas. After his death, the estate was divided, although some of the land at the end of Clifton Court, is still open space today.

• St Peter’s Girls’ School is set on lovely grounds in Stonyfell. This popular school was initially established in Kermode Street North Adelaide in 1894 and moved to current grounds in 1957, to make room for the expansion of the Women and Children’s Hospital.
  
  
• The school is also the site of historic Chiverton House, built in Italianate style in 1880. Chiverton was leased at one stage to Harry Bickford who created the iconic SA brand Bickford’s Cordial.

The Good

• Michael Perry Botanic Reserve was named after longstanding Councillor, Alderman and Mayor of Burnside, who was active with Council between 1958 and 1983.
  
  
• Ferguson Park is a category 3 protected area and was established as park in 1977.
  
  
• Stonyfell is not far from our state’s highest peak, Mount Lofty, and there’s an excellent walking trail just beyond the suburb.

The Ugly

• Residents report that Stonyfell isn’t great for nightlife. If you want some excitement and hustle bustle in your suburb, Stonyfell isn’t for you! About the only thing you will encounter of an evening is a possum!
  
  
• As Stonyfell is right on the city fringe, the public transport services are a little infrequent.
  
  
• Although it’s very safe in Stonyfell, it has been noticed that there’s not much street lighting and also not many footpaths for walking.

• Stonyfell is not far from Burnside Village which is great for shopping.
  
  
• A scan of the satellite pictures of Stonyfell reveal many homes have their own outdoor pools, but if you’re place isn’t one of them, Stonyfell is not far from Kensington Pool.

Wine

Stonyfell is synonymous with great wine. The Stonyfell vineyards were established in 1858 and named in part for the local stone and part after the sloped in England known as ‘fells’. The first wines from the site were produced in 1859 and the area is now recognised for Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Not far from Stonyfell you’ll also find Penfold’s Winery, where you can enjoy a meal and tastings.

At the 2016 census there were just over 450 properties in Stonyfell with a total population of just over 1,200. Almost 40% of the population is considered professional with a further 20% being in managerial roles. More than 50% of households comprised a couple with children. The median age was 43.
