While the sharpness of the land has become part of its appeal, local attitudes toward development remain largely unchanged. The most obvious example of this is the environmental action groups that have been established in the area like STEP Inc. which was formed in 1978 to oppose a planned motorway extension that would have destroyed bushland on the southern edge of the suburb, and continues its advocacy work today.

Thanks to these groups there has been very little development in South Turramurra for several decades. As a result, the local population has remained quite stable and housing density has stayed very low (less than 2% of property is attached). Add to this the low turnover rate (only a handful of homes come up for sale each year) and it’s easy to see why South Turramurra is considered one of the most exclusive and desirable enclaves in Sydney.

Residential blocks are also firmly on the larger side (most are over a quarter of an acre) and the bushland that dominated the area prior to development can still be seen throughout the local landscape.
