Maylands is one of Adelaide’s prettiest and most conveniently located suburbs, sitting in an area just 0.5km squared. Its main boundaries are Portrush and Magill Roads. Maylands is just 4km from the centre of Adelaide.

The name Maylands was chosen by early settlers William Wadham and Luke M Cullen. The name was in reference to the township of Mayland, in the English county of Essex, which was the birthplace of Wadham’s wife Jane.

Maylands is in the local government area of Norwood, Payenham & St Peters, and is in the Maylands / Trinity Ward. Maylands has a unique mix of housing types and a number of historical buildings. You will find good examples of colonial, Federation and art deco architecture throughout the suburb. There are a surprising number of large blocks remaining in Maylands; these had been created to provide space for gardens for their original residents and unlike in some other areas have not been subdivided in more recent years. There are even a couple of interesting “workers cottages” in Maylands.

There’s also a unique tram shed that has been retained on Magill Road, but repurposed for modern living. The tram shed was built in 1882, and included a foreman’s site and stables. The site was redeveloped in the 1980s by the Metropolitan Tramways Trust and converted into townhouses, but the original structure and façade have been retained. Interpretive signage about the barn and early tram transport in Adelaide can now be viewed from the site.
